Climate change + eco-efficiency
Change is in the air—but not in a good way
Climate change is happening. It is an environmental problem that has risen to the top of public and political agendas around the world. Its urgency is beginning to be felt by companies that are now making action against global warming a key priority. At ACCIONA, we are aware that humans are becoming more and more concerned about the current model of production and consumption. We’re concerned, too, which is why we seek to lead the way in sustainable development.
Our commitment to sustainability means we adhere to three basic pillars to support it: generation of economic wellbeing, environmental improvement and responsibility toward society. ACCIONA believes that the only effective way of putting these principles into practice is to incorporate sustainable development into the heart of our business—in both our strategy and operations—as a valuable long-term investment.
We implement this way of doing business around two axes:
- Eco-efficiency and the effect on climate change
- Social development, as promoted through specific projects and initiatives from the various areas of our business
Reducing ACCIONA’s carbon footprint
We want to be a leading player in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Climate change is a major threat for global socioeconomic and ecological systems. This conclusion is based on scientific evidence supporting the existence of global warming caused by human-generated greenhouse gases. The world is coming together to reverse this dangerous trend, and ACCIONA is leading the effort by making a commitment to reduce global CO2 emissions significantly. In 2009, ACCIONA avoided 7,861,526 tons of CO2 emissions through investing and developing renewable energy and sustainable projects throughout the world.
These three paths to reversing global warming are equally critical:
- Energy efficiency—the optimization of internal energy consumption
- Innovation in the market and new business opportunities for services and products
- Promotion of projects within the sphere of the Kyoto Protocol as a commitment to international development
